Biography

John Platt advises and represents clients in intellectual property matters including: IP strategies, patent and trademark prosecutions, IP audits, IP due diligence, licensing agreements, contracts and intellectual property litigation.

In the patent prosecution area, John has experience with a wide variety of technologies including: energy storage, clean and green technology, alternative and renewable energy technology such as wind energy, solar energy, smart grid, and hybrid vehicles, as well as traditional energy generation technology in the fields of coal, natural gas, nuclear and petroleum energy generation. John has experience across various battery technologies including Lithium Ion batteries, Flow batteries, and advanced lead-acid batteries. He also has extensive experience in power regulation inventions, RF transceiver and antenna related inventions, global positioning, semiconductor manufacturing, MMIC and other circuit inventions. John has prosecuted many patents in the area of internet commerce, software and business method patents. John regularly helps protect inventions in unmanned aircraft systems, including power and control systems for drones.

John is currently Secretary of the Board of NAATBatt International, an industry group “supporting developments in the science of and markets for advanced electrochemical energy storage technology consistent with the goals of enhancing energy efficiency, reducing petroleum dependence and enabling carbon-free electricity generation.” John spoke on a panel about intellectual property in the battery industry at NAATBatt’s annual meeting in March 2016, spoke at The Battery Show in Novi, Michigan Sept 2016 and also organized an IP Battery Symposium held in Phoenix, AZ, March 2017.

Prior to becoming an attorney, John earned degrees in both electrical and mechanical engineering and worked as an engineer. John designed the HVAC systems for cleanrooms in the semiconductor industry, giving him a broad understanding of the semiconductor manufacturing process. John also worked inside a coal fired power plant, giving him a keen understanding of relevant energy generation/transmission technologies and issues.
