With a background in construction management, general contracting, and civil and environmental engineering, Laurie Choi provides clients with practical and strategic solutions for real-world construction issues. Laurie counsels clients through construction contract drafting and negotiation, resolution of disputes arising from construction projects, legal advice for providing construction services, filing and bonding around mechanic’s liens, and other construction concerns. Laurie obtained her Nevada General Contractor’s License in 2009. She now focuses on the practice of law in both Colorado and California.
Construction Dispute Resolution
• Led dispute resolution team on behalf of a top automotive services company in over a dozen construction and real estate disputes venued in multiple jurisdictions
• First chaired an arbitration on behalf of a large regional general contractor in a dispute with a subcontractor
• Led dispute resolution team for lender in lien foreclosure dispute with multiple lenders, multiple borrowers, and dozens of contractor claimants
• Led dispute resolution team for top replacement homebuilder in dozens of disputes across multiple states with individuals and entities
• Led dispute resolution team for multi-family residential developer/builder in multiple disputes across multiple states with subcontractors
• Represented a top 5 homebuilder in multiple disputes with individuals and homeowners associations venued in private arbitration and Colorado District Court
• Represented an ENR Top 50 design builder in complex litigation matter with design subcontractor venued in U.S. District Court
• Represented a national general contractor in project closeout and dispute resolution for multiple 250+ unit apartment complex projects, including several actions venued in Colorado District Court
• Represented a government contractor in an arbitration with a subcontractor in defense of extra work and schedule impact claims
• Assisted at trial in representation of ski resort in case for over $1 million in damages involving slope stability.
• Represented Top-10 ENR Engineering Firm in multiple tort actions related to a highway projects in the Rocky Mountains
• Represented owners in defending against lien claims and contractors in pursuing lien claims in Colorado and California
Construction Transactions and Counseling
• Drafted and negotiated dozens of construction and real estate agreements for a top replacement homebuilder in multiple jurisdictions
• Drafted and negotiated design and construction agreements for Colorado luxury residential developer for projects totalling over $50 million
• Drafted and negotiated agreements on behalf of a Fortune 500 resort and entertainment owner for the design and construction of a $1.3 billion resort and an $800 million resort. Agreements included Architect, Design Consultant, Engineering, General Contractor, Trade Contractor, various consulting, Construction Manager at risk, FF&E, Extension of Staff, Master Services, DAS, and Commissioning Agreements. Also assisted in revising the project’s safety manual and internal procedures manuals. Worked with the company’s risk management department to analyze construction and contracting-related risks
• Drafted and negotiated prime agreements on behalf of owners and general contractors with project values upwards of $70 million using AIA, DBIA, EJCDC and custom forms
• Drafted and negotiated subcontracts for general contractors and subcontractors using custom and industry template forms
• Assisted Top-10 ENR General Contractor with overhauling its standard construction agreements, including design- build agreements, joint venture agreements, P3 agreements, purchase orders, design services agreement, subcontract agreement
• Seconded to an ENR Top 10 contractor. Services involve contract review, analysis of potential claims, analysis of construction industry issues (including P3, bonding, lender consent agreement, industry-standard form construction agreement, right of entry agreements, document retention, and licensing requirements), and drafting of internal policies, procedures, and forms
